Stupid and uneducated don't match.
Hans and I once spent a day trying to figure out why the tape drive on a CAT scanner had one reel running the wrong way until Hans realized the tape was wound backwards on the supply reel.
Turns out because of a defective EOT marker, the unit had run off the end of the supply reel. Harv had rewound it on the supply reel, but got it backwards, (like the takeup reel.)
When it didn't work right, Harv wound some more and tried again, and again, and again, until he had rewould 2400' of tape by hand.
Harv has a PhD in Physics.

I was in grad school with a guy who was extremely bright in the theoretical aspects of physics, but a complete dunderhead in the lab. A professor had spent 2 weeks developing a specialized tool to use. My co-grad student broke within 10 seconds.
I think that the prof passed him more out of fear of the damage he'd inflict if forced to repeat the course.
